First, if and how the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) will be implemented; second the impact of the Abraham Accords between Israel, the United States and some Arab States on the security situation in the Middle East; and third the issue of the Nuclear Weapon Free Zone in the Middle East (NWFZME), which will be again on the Agenda of the Nonproliferation Review Conference this year. The event will discuss what the relations between these issues are and whether it will change the balance of power situation in the Middle East.   Previous discussions in the series “USA: Back to Multilateralism?” include: 20 January: The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) enters into force 🎬 21 January: What Future of US-EU cooperation? Content:

The United States’ role in the world has undergone some profound changes lately. Its status of an international leader, the great power in a unipolar world and a global agenda-setter has been increasingly questioned and challenged both domestically and internationally. One can speak of an ongoing global structure shift where transformations within and around the United States warrant close attention and careful analysis. The IIP has launched a series of discussions titled USA and the World that aim to shed some light on such pressing issues as the status of arms control negotiations, the transatlantic relations, and the upcoming presidential elections in the United States.

The discussion will be held in English.

Inhalt:

FRIENDS WITH ENEMIES – Neutrality and Nonalignment Then and Now

The International Institute for Peace (IIP) and the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study in cooperation with the Department of Sociology at the University of Vienna & PEN-Club Austria cordially invite you to the upcoming conference on the topic:

FRIENDS WITH ENEMIES
Neutrality and Nonalignment Then and Now

Date:                                   Monday-Tuesday, 2 – 3 March 2020

University of Vienna – Skylounge, Oskar-Morgenstern Platz 1, 1090 Vienna

Registration:                       https://www.iipvienna.com/registration/

Commemorating 65years of Austrian neutrality law we are pleased to announce a two-day conference on neutrality and nonalignment. Thirty years after the end of the Cold War, the ‘End of History’ is as far away as always, and the international security environment is changing again. With the rise of China, the resurgence of Russia, and novel ideas for security mechanisms in Europe, the world of US-led unipolarity is drawing to a close. Alliances in Europe and Asia are not as clear-cut as they used to be and even core institutions like NATO or the US-Japan alliance have come under pressure unheard of only a decade ago. What does that mean for neutrals and nonaligned countries? Join us in the audience to debate neutrality in the twenty-first century.
